What is the Campaign About?

Our Safety Net Grant campaign aims to secure funding from the Welsh Government to address hazardous housing disrepair in Wales. We want to ensure that older people living in owner-occupied homes can get the urgent repairs they need to live safely and independently.

Why It’s Important

Hazardous disrepair in homes poses significant risks to health and safety. Issues like old wiring, damp walls, and unstable floors can lead to accidents and serious health problems. Without proper repairs, older people are left living in unsafe conditions, which can have a detrimental impact on their physical and mental well-being.

What Could Happen If We Don’t Get a Safety-Net Grant?

If we don’t secure the Safety-Net Grant, many older people will continue to live in poor housing conditions. Minor issues will worsen, leading to more hazardous disrepair that requires more extensive and costly interventions. This not only puts lives at risk but also strains health and social care services in Wales.

Mrs Thomas from Newport

Mrs Thomas contacted Care & Repair because her lights were not working properly. When the caseworker did a Healthy Homes Check, they found that the wiring in her house was very old and in poor condition. The fuse board had scorch marks around the fuses, and large appliances could not be used together. The lights on the first floor were not working, and the condition of the wiring was so bad that it was considered a Category 1 hazard, meaning it could cause a fire.

The Care & Repair caseworker was able to get £2,500 of benevolent funding from SSAFA (the Armed Forces charity). However, the total cost for the rewiring was £3,360, meaning there was still a shortfall of £860. This left Mrs Thomas living in an unsafe property. A Safety-Net Grant would have provided the necessary funds to complete this work, improve the home energy efficiency and keep Mrs Thomas safe.
